Interim evaluation of the Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (2024-2025)

Budget

Pursuant to Article 8 of Regulation (EU) 2024/795 of the European Parliament and of the Council, this evaluation will provide an assessment of the implementation of the Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP). In particular, it will assess to which extent the objectives of the STEP have been achieved, the efficiency of the use of the resources, and its European added value.

Environmental groups urge end to fossil fuel funding under STEP

The organization demands explicit exclusion of fossil fuel-based technologies, including carbon capture, from public funding. They want priority given to circular materials, material substitution, and electrification technologies. They request stricter conditions requiring 95% carbon capture rates and transparent accountability for projects receiving the STEP seal.
This would redirect billions in EU funding toward their preferred zero-emissions technologies and circular economy approaches.
