The evaluation of Directive 2009/18/EC on maritime accident investigation showed that the establishment of a permanent accident investigation body is sometimes perceived as a burden. The revision will look at identifying means to support Member States, including by sharing and/or pooling resources; making use of the European Maritime Safety Agency and benefitting from EU-wide facilities, and addressing fatal accidents involving smaller fishing vessels.
