The ozone layer filters out most of the sun's harmful UV radiation and is crucial to life on Earth. The EU has an ambitious policy protecting the ozone layer and ensuring compliance with the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer. It is also contributing to the 2050 climate neutrality goal. An evaluation shows that the rules are generally fit for purpose but there is scope for simplifications, clarity, better coherence and considering new technological developments.
