Strengthening of Europol’s mandate

Home affairs

This initiative aims at revising the mandate of Europol, the EU Agency supporting cooperation among the EU law enforcement authorities. It will enable Europol to deal with the evolving nature of crimes carried out by means of the internet and with financial crimes. It will also align the procedures establishing cooperation with third countries with other EU Agencies and align data protection provisions with existing EU rules

Microsoft urges EU to finalize eEvidence rules before expanding Europol powers

Microsoft supports expanding Europol's powers to coordinate cross-border investigations and request data directly from providers, but only after the EU completes adoption of the eEvidence regulation. They emphasize that any new powers must be governed by high standards to protect fundamental rights and rule of law.
This would ensure clear procedural rules are in place before they face direct data requests from Europol.
Law enforcement loses faster access to cross-border evidence during ongoing criminal investigations.
