The initiative aims to enshrine in secondary legislation the meaning of legal tender of euro cash. Currently this is only set out in a judgment of 2021 of the Court of Justice of the EU and in a Commission Recommendation of 2010 on the scope and effects of legal tender of euro banknotes and coins. The initiative will clarify the legal tender status of euro cash, thereby safeguarding the role of euro cash. It will also ensure coherence with the related initiative establishing the digital euro
