Response to Package travel – review of EU rules

ABTA welcomes the opportunity to provide feedback to the European Commissions review of the Package Travel Directive (PTD). Six years after the adoption of the Regulations, and with the industry having gone through the greatest crisis that it has ever faced in the pandemic, ABTA acknowledges that the Commission is seeking to address the challenges around refunds, vouchers, advance payments and insolvency protection that arose during the pandemic in addition to the overall difficulties in implementing the PTD. However, many of the proposals are too complex for both consumers and traders in a normal business setting and the Commission must take this opportunity to reconsider how the correct balance can continue to be struck between giving businesses the support, regulatory freedom and flexibility required to flourish whilst offering consumers the high levels of reassurance and confidence that help to underpin the success of the travel industry.
