Response to Sustainable use of pesticides – revision of the EU rules

16 Sept 2022

The Agriculture & Progress Platform brings together sugar beet growers, maize growers and sugar manufacturers at European level, practicing and striving to further improve sustainable agricultural production. We have recently been confronted once again with the necessity of keeping food production in the EU in order to ensure sufficient food security. Making sure the EU agriculture and primary food processing sector remain competitive is therefore key and plant protection products (PPPs) are important in that context. Therefore, we are closely following the proposed Sustainable Use of Pesticides Regulation (SUR). As a complement to our earlier position, we would like to express our specific views on some key elements of the proposal. See actual point attached to this response.

The Agriculture & Progress Platform (CIBE, CEFS, and CEPM) brings together the agricultural producers and the primary food processing industry to promote sustainable agriculture. The Platform’s mission is to give the agricultural and primary food processing industry a tool to provide society and decision-makers with answers and suggestions on the needs and challenges of guaranteeing sustainable agriculture and to highlight the important role of innovation in this context. In view of this, the Agriculture & Progress Platform recognises that sustainable innovation needs investment and welcomes the overarching goal of the sustainable finance regulation to enable financial flows to support sustainable growth and transition to a carbon neutral economy. Investment in agriculture and sustainability has always been key. The search for an optimal contribution of agriculture to the environment is at the heart of the latest reforms of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). This objective is fully shared by the primary food processing industry, which has optimised its inputs by using new technologies. Please find our full POSITION PAPER in the attachment.
