Response to Information and promotion measures for agricultural and food products in the internal market and in non-EU countries

INTERPORC (Spanish Inter-professional Agri-Food Organization for White Pork) is a non-profit entity that represents the entire Spanish white pork sector, including its production, processing and marketing. We consider that in recent years, EU Promotion Programmes have demonstrated to be effective & efficient tools to inform with rigor and transparency about the European production model, based on high standards of safety, quality, traceability, animal welfare, animal health and respect for the environment. In addition, they allow to increase awareness and recognition of high-quality, safe and nutritious products not only in the internal market but also in third countries. In this context, through our current campaign “Let´s Talk About European Pork” we are getting to reach and interact with consumers (including millennials) to show satisfactorily that the European model of pig production complies with the most demanding regulations in the world in food safety and traceability that results in quality and nutritious pork which is versatile and healthy to include in a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle following the proven nutritional guidelines and scientific recommendations. For those reasons, we consider that EU promotion policies are necessary and very useful for our sector and we support the current need to reinforce the focus on ‘sustainable production methods’ in line with the Farm To Fork Strategy, but not on products and/or sectors. Consequently, we are not in favour to exclude any specific products or sectors on these policies. We think that is essential to promote sustainable business practices implemented by food business operators as an incentive (e.g. protecting the animal welfare, fighting climate change, promoting the efficient use of resources…) and at the same time to communicate the main achievements in recent years on these matters to get added value of EU products. We strongly believe that promotion for sectors which are investing in these issues are of huge importance. As pork sector is fully committed with sustainability and seeks to provide safe, nutritious and high-quality pork minimizing environmental impact, it must not be forgotten in this legal review. Likewise, the sector has an important commitment to create greener and more technological employment; to contribute to the social and economic structuring (depopulation, rural development, entrepreneurship and equal opportunities until reaching 50% of female employment); and to boost the circular economy through the valorization of the by-products of the industry or the application of ecodesign strategies and improvement in the use of resources.
