The network of Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreements is a key tool to spread the values of the CFP and to consolidate the importance and influence of the EU in the international marine gobernance and on a geostrategic level. This is specially important in Africa and when countries that were red or yellow carded, such us Guinea, are involved.
Guinea was delisted from the EU carding system in October 2016 and ever since the EU fishing fleet has been fishing in their EEZ.
A Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement between the EU and Guinea should follow to:
1) Make sure the access that the European fleet is currently enjoying to the Guinean waters.
2) Contribute to the good management of the Guinean fisheries sector and the fight against IUU fishing in that country.
3) Increase transparency in the licensing conditions and fisheries policies in Guinea.
4) To have regular interlocution and gain allies to potentially support European proposals in RFMOs, such as ICCAT.
