Association européenne des marchés aux bestiaux

AEMB

The AEMB focuses its efforts on: • defending and promoting the role of the livestock markets at international and EU level; • asserting the economic strength of the livestock markets and their role in the organisation of the livestock and meat markets, and more especially in the formulation of prices; • promoting the improvement and modernisation of the market buildings and equipment; • developing a European consultation and information network.

Response to Protection of animals during transport

We would like to thank the Commission for this call for contributions. The European Association of Livestock Markets (AEMB) was created on 14th June 1983. Today it brings together 6 national federations representing 359 livestock markets. These markets are responsible for the sale (by auction or private treaty) of over 22 million head of cattle, sheep, pigs, and horses. Livestock markets are an important link in the meat chain, between the farmer, the traders and the slaughterhouse. Livestock markets have an essential role to play for their users, for to ensure fair prices through competition between buyers, to disseminate information and best practice, to maintain economic activity in rural areas and create social links. We are concern about this proposal that will be very detrimental not only to livestock markets, but also to decentralisation and rural development orientation. Please find our contribution attached. Best regards
