Response to Savings and Investments Union

24 Feb 2025

The Association of Proprietary Traders (APT) in Amsterdam welcomes the opportunity to provide feedback on the Savings and Investment Union. Capital markets play an important role in society and the European economy, and are essential for supporting the investment and risk offsetting needs of governments, institutional and private investors alike. Efficient capital markets can generate the capital needed to fund the green transition, create fully invested retirement pension schemes, and allocate capital to start-ups and primary markets. But we feel there that EU markets currently remain underdeveloped and less integrated, less diverse, less liquid, and more costly compared with markets in the US and APAC regions. In the attached paper we discuss 4 areas where we believe EU financial markets could be improved to make them more efficient, integrated and liquid, so that they can contribute to a successful and vibrant CMU. In relation to those 4 areas, we make 12 concrete recommendations that the APT believes will structurally improve the attractiveness of financial markets in the EU and increase the returns for both investors and issuers of capital.
