Titanium is identified by the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRM) of 2023 as a strategic material for which a safe and sustainable supply must be guaranteed. The EUs Critical Raw Materials Act, passed in 2023, sets clear 2030 benchmarks for strategic materialsincluding titanium. The advantages of titanium are its weight, mechanical properties (fatigue, ductility), corrosion resistance. Titanium alloys are used in : - aeronautics (turbines, structure, landing gear). Titanium represents between 10 and 20% of the mass of new programs - Defense (not. missile parts) - Nuclear A "Sovereign" titanium assumes that all elements of the titanium value chain are mastered in Europe. Aubert & Duval produces through his subsididary EcoTitanium titanium ingots. Titanium ingots are made with titanium sponges (25 % of raw materials needs) and recycled materials (75 % of raw materials needs). There is no sponge manufacturing plant in Europe so the important asset of European titanium industry is the ability to collect scrap, which represents 75% of material needs, and is now available without restriction in Europe. This technological has the advantage of avoiding about 80,000/100,000 tons of CO2 at full capacity if EcoTitanium and strongly favours sovereignty of supply. Then, we suggest to integrate components for aircraft engines, airframes and landing gear systems for aeronautics in the list of products, components and waste streams considered as having potential to recover critical raw materials.
