Response to Evaluation of the Aid Programme to the Turkish Cypriot community

8 Dec 2018

Thank you first for inviting us to give feedback. This is our first feedback and we highly appreciate the inclusion of the Turkish community in measures to better the situation in entire Cyprus. While we since 2016 conduct the World Social Capital Monitor, a UN SDGs Partnership Project https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/partnership/?p=11706 we still have first results on eight crucial indicators to creating the bridging social capital required to achieve reunification - such as especially: - Interpersonal/mutual trust - The willingness to co-finance public goods - The willingness to invest in local SME and cooperatives - Helpfulness - Friendliness - Hospitality While these indicators are assessed locally - not only National - by open access the Monitor will be a step to identifying and enhancing social goods in both parts of Cyprus. Here the two versions: Turkish: https://trustyourplace.com/?lang=turkish Greek: https://trustyourplace.com/?lang=greek So we would offer to conduct the Cyprus Social Capital Monitor from the beginning of the public consultations on (early 2019) in both parts of Cyprus and repeating it in late 2019. We then would be capable to providing a timeline of all eight indicators by region/town and therefore in the future to assess the outcome of any economic or political measure on a semi-annual base. The inclusion of the entire population in the Monitor in our view may be a way to build up trust and confidence in administrative interventions. While the mediation by the UN has not been successful yet we would offer, together with this civil participation action, an ongoing dialogue featuring the results. The European Union now has the chance to move beside the most crucial economic obstacle in Cyprus: the transaction costs of military and administration that eat all economic perspectives of small businesses in agriculture, tourism and services that can be successfully established in this outstanding location.
