Response to EU Pollinators Initiative

29 Dec 2017

This initiative is very positive and necessary. We do hope that the European Commission and Member states achieve to bring a more holistic approach in the policies affecting in one way or another the environment and public health. As for the document, the only reason why "pathogens are considered a drive primarily in the context of domesticated pollinators" is because they are studied much more and in further detail than any other driver and/or for wild pollinators. However, considering the generalized negative tendencies on pollinators populations and disorders and on biodiversity as a whole, the main drivers are intuitively other more crosscutting like land-use change, intensive agriculture or climate change. As for "how to achieve the objectives of the initiative" there is some work to do on policy development. However, in our opinion the main efforts need to be done on policy implementation and enforcement. We do hope that the different services with responsibilities on the pollinators health at different levels (EU, national and regional) manage to work together. We, beekeepers, propose a citizens science approach to control and identify where pollinators have little chance to thrive.
