Response to Revision of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive

Bio-Rad welcomes the Commission proposal to review the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD. It presents an opportunity to ensure EU-wide systematic surveillance of emerging pathogens in wastewater and create a foundation for more rapid public health responses. While the Commission UWWTD proposal addresses several of our concerns, Bio-Rad believes that EUs pandemic preparedness can be further improved through the Wastewater Treatment Directive by: 1. Including a deadline for Member States implementation of national systems for wastewater surveillance by 2025 2. Reporting wastewater monitoring results to national health authorities without delay 3. Ensuring weekly surveillance of pathogens which constitutes a communicable disease threat according to the ECDC or a public health emergency or international concern by the WHO 4. Establishing harmonised EU approaches to testing of wastewater through guidelines Bio-Rad is looking forward to cooperating with EU and national stakeholders responsible for wastewater surveillance to ensure that the UWWTD improves EUs pandemic preparedness.
