Response to The European Oceans Pact

Bolton fully supports the objectives of the Ocean Pact and considers it as a crucial driver of lasting positive change for the fishery sector and ocean conservation. However, we stress the risk of prescriptive, one-size-fits-all regulations that disregard regional differences or fleet-specific constraints. Such policies could disrupt supply chains without delivering meaningful sustainability benefits. We call for an Ocean pact that ensures a robust, consistent, and harmonised implementation of due diligence requirements and existing regulations across EU Member States and third countries, guarantees fair competition, enhances transparency, promotes certification scheme and strengthen international governance. Bolton stands ready to support the European Commission in delivering on an Ocean Pact that ensures healthy, sustainable and productive Oceans.
