Response to Commission Regulation setting maximum residue levels for chlorate in or on certain products

14 Feb 2019

The German Federal Association of the fruit, vegetable and potato processing industry (BOGK) represents the sixth largest sector in the German food industry. BOGK members are deeply concerned about the recent draft by the European Commission on chlorate MRLs for the different products. After submitting the draft to its membership, the BOGK again requested chlorate data from members for many product categories as part of a monitoring process. These data show that the MRLs presented by the European Commission are often exceeded and can not be met. These data were sent to FoodDrinkEurope by our national umbrella organisation to inform the European Commission. Our member companies informed us again that the chlorate problem arises from the treatment of the products with washing/drinking water. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to observe the correlation when setting maximum values or thresholds. The European Commission mentioned this as well in previous chlorate documents. The BOGK therefore asks the European Commission to adjust the corresponding values for chlorate in analogy to maximum values for drinking/ washing water.
