Response to Ecodesign for Sustainable Products - Product priorities

Sustainable wood as an essential raw material for furniture can only be ensured by government regulators through the ETR, and not by manufacturers - especially SMEs. Requirements for recycling should be limited to non-renewable materials. Recycling of wood is limited due to risk of dangerous substances (solid wood) or very high energy consumption (wood-based panels). So thermal recycling should be treated in the same way as material recycling of wood products, since CO2 released corresponds to the CO2 bound during the growth phase. Need of different requirements for domestic and non-domestic furniture as lifetime and manufacturing by furniture industry or SMEs are very different. Repairability and remanufacturing depends on the availability of standardized hardware products, as SMEs cannot supply specific spare parts for life cycles of more than 20 years.
