Swedish Construction Firms Urge Simpler EU Procurement Rules

7 Mar 2025
Message — Byggföretagen argues directives should focus on procedures rather than political goals. They demand reduced administrative burdens for small firms and unrestricted use of subcontractors.123
Why — Simplifying rules and allowing contract adjustments would reduce costs and risks for construction companies.45
Impact — Trade unions and environmental groups lose if labor and green requirements stay voluntary.67

Swedish Construction Federation urges asbestos removal only during renovations

8 Feb 2023
Message — Focus decontamination exclusively on the renovation or demolition stages of building lifecycles. Avoid mandatory extensive screening or lower exposure limits that could trigger unnecessary fiber release and administrative burdens.12
Why — Construction firms would avoid high costs of frequent measurements and prevent rogue competitors from gaining advantages.34
Impact — Building occupants lose protection and transparency if hazardous materials remain in place until future renovations.5

Response to European Critical Raw Materials Act

25 Nov 2022

Summary It is the position of the Swedish Construction Federation that to promote resilience and competitiveness, the Commission must: - widen the scope of the Act to include strategic raw materials, - enhance the opportunities for exploration, extraction and refining of metals and minerals in general, - identify inconsistencies in EU legislation that may conflict with EU objectives, especially climate target objectives, - maintain a holistic view when creating or reviewing legislation, in order to deal with the complexities of competing interests, and - incentivise the further recovery and recycling of secondary and raw materials. Please see our position paper for our views in full.
