Response to Advanced Materials Act

13 Jan 2026

As representative of a company manufacturing advanced carbon nanomaterials, we strongly support this initiative and believe that advanced materials play a crucial role in the European economy in many different sectors. They are the essential building blocks of advanced manufacturing in sectors such as transport, energy, electronics, construction, medical devices and many others. We hope that this initiative gives Europe the ability to create and use advanced materials at scale. This includes public support for scaling up advanced materials from R&D prototypes to full production. The Act should include incentives for materials that increase lifecycle benefits and result in reduced carbon footprint, eg., conductive materials like carbon nanotubes and graphenes can greatly increase conductivity of products with lower mass volumes needed. We would like to see a simpler regulatory legislative system and give industry the tools it requires to navigate the regulatory landscape. Industry needs clear guidance and rules on testing requirements so that they can bring new materials to the market efficiently. The Act is an opportunity to simplify testing and ensure that advanced materials do not have unnecessary additional testing requirements. This has been the case already for advanced nanomaterials where testing requirements have been disproportionate compared to bulk counterparts. The Act should provide direct support for industrialization, which will ensure Europes place in a globally competitive world and remain a global leader in the research, innovation, uptake, use and circularity of advanced materials. Example 1: Carbon nanotubes are used as conductive additives in the NCM electrode. -CNTs are incorporated into nickelcobaltmanganese (NCM) cathodes to provide superior electrical conductivity and mechanical reinforcement compared to conventional carbon additives. - CNTs form percolating conductive networks that improve electron transport between NCM particles and the current collector, reducing internal resistance and enhancing charge/discharge efficiency. - Their high aspect ratio and tunable morphology (diameter and wall number) allow optimization of conductivity, mechanical strength, and dispersion properties. - Diameters and wall structures can vary: singlewall CNTs (SWCNTs) are very fine and highly conductive, while multiwall CNTs (MWCNTs) are thicker and more robust both types are used depending on performance and cost requirements. Example 2: CNTs are used as conductive additives in the LFP electrode. - CNTs are incorporated into lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathodes to overcome the inherently lower electronic conductivity of LFP compared to other chemistries. - CNTs form percolating conductive networks that facilitate electron transport between LFP particles and the current collector, reducing internal resistance and improving charge/discharge efficiency. Overall, CNTs im improve rate capability, cycle life, and structural stability of LFP cathodes, enabling highperformance lithiumion batteries with better power delivery and durability. Example 3: Carbon black as a conductive additive improves electron transport, reduces resistance, enhances electrode performance - It forms a conductive network within the electrode composite, ensuring efficient electron transport between active material particles and the current collector. - Enhances rate capability, reduces internal resistance, and improves cycle life. - Also contributes to mechanical stability of the electrode structure.
