To meet the EUs climate neutrality objective and transition to net-negative emissions after 2050, it is essential to scale a permanent carbon dioxide removal (CDR) sector that includes a diverse portfolio of high-integrity solutions. The EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) is one of the most powerful tools at our disposal to achieve that. To realise its potential, it is essential for any integration of CDR into the ETS to be technology-neutral by design. The newly adopted Carbon Removal Certification Framework (CRCF) is a critical step forward and provides the perfect building block for integration, especially when considering all certified permanent CDR methods. As the leading infrastructure provider for durable CDR globally, Carbonfuture has joined over 200 other signatories in a joint letter to the European Commission, calling for robust, inclusive policies that reward quality and permanencenot specific technologies. A tech-open approach is vital for investment, innovation, and long-term market resilience. With the right policy framework, Europe can lead in building a trusted, effective carbon removal ecosystem at the scale our climate demands.
