Response to 2030 Climate Target Plan

On behalf of Citoyens pour le Climat, we would like to thank the European Commission for this clear document and pragmatic initiative.
We have commented the PDF document. Our key comments are:
- Carbon footprint should be used as target, instead of carbon emissions as the latter does not reflect our actual and thorough impact on climate change
- It is unrealistic to decrease our carbon footprint and keep our energy consumption unchanged at the same time and over the coming years. At a constant level of energy consumption, the use of fossil fuels will remain necessary and our impact on biodiversity will not be reduced;
- Climate crisis will have huge impacts on human activities. To mitigate this crisis, major modifications will have to be made: 1) in our consumption habits, 2) on the “old” GDP-based economic paradigm, seeking for ever-lasting growth, and 3) on “competitiveness” with other countries. Climate change is a global crisis. Poorer countries will be mostly and firstly impacted. In turn, Europe will have to cope with massive immigration. Cooperation should replace frantic search for competitiveness
- GDP and growth should not be the sole economic indicators; instead, social progress, equity, resilience capacities are relevant in the current context.
