In Spain there's no real separation of powers between government and judiciary. At the highest instances, i.e. the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court, the judges are appointed by political parties. The President on the Constitutional Court, who had to judge the laws issued by Partido Popular was a member of this Partido Popular.
In Spain there are political prisoners. Four members of the former Catalan government and civil leaders are in jail because of their ideas. The judges on the Supreme Court admit that they must stay in preventive jail because they haven't changed their political ideas.
There have been jail sentences for singers, puppeters and writers... only because they attacked the Spanish government of the Spanish Crown. I thought that laws had to protect the weakest members of the society, not the most privileged ones (monarchy). Freedom of speach is in danger in Spain.
The director of the Spanish police (Guardia Civil) who attacked pacific demonstrators during the past referendum on Catalonia independence has been promoted. No charge for any policemen for excessive use of force against pacific demonstrators. The scariest part of it is: if you want to know what really happened, don't check the Spanish press; you'll have to check the foreign press (France, UK, Germany....). Any country with independent press.
A man wearing a clown-nose besides a policeman was sentenced with hate crimes. A man on a tank (a real tank) shouting death menaces against the Catalan President and the leader of a left-wing party Podemos was set free... because those persons provocked the situation that he was atackint. In that case, the Spanish court put the blame on the attacked persons.
The Spanish government prohibits the debate about some issues (as independence) in the Catalan Parlament because it's illegal. Well, abortion or divorce were illegal and Parlaments were able to discuss about it.
The judge on the Supreme Court who keeps the Catalan leaders in preventive jail activated an euroorder against former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont, and later on withdrew it. He claims Carles Puigdemont, four former Catalan Counselors and a former Catalan Member of Pralament are fugitive, but he takes no movement to arrest them, knowing where they live (UK, Belgium and Switzerland).
Spanish deputy Pablo Casado claimed that the Catalan President Mr. Puigdemont could end up as his predecessor Lluis Companys, who was killed by the dictatorial regime on the ground of political reasons. Public prosecutors found no offence in his words. And they found no offence either when Pablo Casado reminded the actual President of Catalan Parlament, Roger Torrent, that he had two kids and shoul take it into account while exercising his functions.
In summary: there is total impunity for attacks against Catalan independence movements, politicans and people. But all signs against Spanish police (a red-clown-nose, for instance), monarchy (a song about proven facts) or the government are harshly judged, and people who dare to do this cand easily end up in jail. Not with a fine. In jail. For months or years.
EU was awarded with the Nobel Peace Price. EU should honour this price and defend freedom of speach in all their territory. Even if it means to act against the government in an EU country member.
