Response to Restoring sustainable carbon cycles

6 Oct 2021

Ligno-cellulosic biomass from various sources (e.g. afforestation, reforestation, agroforestry, agricultural residues) can be converted through thermo-chemical conversion processes in a stable C material called biochar. In particular, pyrolisis provides the highest rate of conversion of biomass carbon in stable carbon. Biochar can be used as an amendment in agriculture: when applied to soil, it constitutes a permanent sink of carbon, thus it is considered as a BECCUS nature-based solution. For this reason also, biochar is indicated as a NET (Negative Emission Technology) by the latest IPCC panel guidelines. Furthermore, biochar can be synergistic to other C-addition strategies in soil (e.g. manure, compost); in addition, compared to these strategies, biochar represents a recalcitrant carbon stock that once added to soil tends to persist for hundreds of years.(Wang, 2016, doi: 10.1111/gcbb.12266). Finally, soil amended with biochar enhances its capacity to retain water (e.g. its Water Holding Capacity), increase physical/chemical fertility, soil organic matter and microbiological biodiversity in soil. Biochar is then to be considered simultaneously as a mean to reduce GHG and to enhance resilience of biochar-based agricultural systems to climate change. When devising policies for its widespread adoption in agriculture, however, particular attention should be provided to the assessment of the processes involved in biomass sourcing, to avoid depletion of natural resources and biodiversity. For the above reasons we recommend that: a) Biochar is considered of highest interest in every Carbon Farming conceptual framework considered by the Roadmap. b) Biochar small-to-medium scale production from pyrolisis and use as soil amendment is directly incentivized to farmers and foresters, especially if coupled synergistically with agro-forestry and agro-ecological solutions, for a circular approach to biomass sourcing. STEFANO SANTARELLI CEO of CONSOTIUM RE-CORD www.re-cord.org RE-CORD is a private-public nonprofit Research & Development organization founded in 2010 that groups together its members resources (know-how, networks, plants, laboratory and other facilities) in a single body able to catch opportunities quickly and efficiently in the field of renewable energies, biomass, bioenergy and bioeconomy. M RE-CORD represents an excellence in research and demonstration, a place where from the experience, passion and dynamism of people innovative ideas are created, developed then brought to reality: new knowledges, new technologies, new products, new practices and new value chains thus take shape. RE-CORD targets advancements in the renewable energy, bioenergy, bioeconomy and sustainable development sectors, in a circular economy scheme and, thanks to its technical and scientific network, connecting Italy to Europe and the rest of the world. In addition RE-CORD’s mission stimulates local competencies, giving highly skilled young graduates opportunities in their home country and abroad, supporting local administrations and domestic companies, so as to reduce emigration of talents.
