Response to Setting of nutrient profiles

2 Feb 2021

1. Front-of-Pack Nutritional Labeling should be: - Developed and implemented by public authorities - Mandatory across the EU - Easy to understand and use - Based on robust independent scientific evidence and research 2. Nutrient profiles - EKPIZO strongly supports the setting of nutrient profiles for the use of nutrition and health claims; due to its absence, many foods and beverages high in fats, salt and/or sugar are still using nutrition and health claims, thus not only confusing but misleading consumers - It is important to ensure coherence and consistency between any FOPNL model and Art. 4(2)(b) of the Nutrition and Health Claims Regulation, which allows products to bear a nutrition claim even if nutrient profiles are exceeded for one nutrient ;derogation granted to nutrition claims under Art. 4(2)(b) should be reconsidered. - It is necessary to address the pending issue of health claims made on botanicals as soon as possible 3. Origin labeling It is well documented through many studies/researches that consumers want to know where their food is coming from. EKPIZO would like to see extension of origin labeling requirements, while strongly supports the policy option 2, i.e. mandatory origin indication provided at national level. Regarding the potential costs of any extension of mandatory origin labeling, it has been shown that no significant cost increases or increased consumer prices have been reported by the Member States who have enacted national origin labeling measures. 4. Date marking In the name of proper, understandable and well presented information to consumers, the date marking should be made clearer and not abolished; therefore, EKPIZO supports the option 3
