European energy regulators demand direct access to methane data

18 Apr 2022
Message — CEER calls for a harmonised system to quantify methane emissions across the entire energy supply chain. They demand that national regulators receive unlimited direct access to all reported data for oversight. They also advocate for independent third-party verification to ensure reporting accuracy.12
Why — Direct data access enables regulators to better manage network operators' allowed revenues and set energy tariffs.3
Impact — Regulated network operators could face financial penalties if they fail to meet specific methane emission requirements.4

Energy regulators urge gradual approach to EU hydrogen rules

12 Apr 2022
Message — The organization advocates for a gradual regulatory approach that adapts to the maturity of the hydrogen sector. They request temporary exemptions for unbundling and network access to allow the market to evolve. Furthermore, they emphasize that national authorities should retain discretion over implementation based on local socio-economic assessments.12
Why — This approach preserves the oversight power and flexibility of national energy regulators.34
Impact — Consumers may face higher costs if tariffs are manipulated to favor trade policy.5
