Response to EU Space Law: Union law for safe, secure and sustainable space activities

The German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina emphasises the need to enact environmental sustainability as one of the guiding principles of the EU Space Act. This principle is necessary to regulate risks associated with the re-entry of satellites and rockets, especially the injection of anthropogenic material into the atmosphere. While the EU Space Act draft addresses the mitigation of space debris mainly in terms of orbital safety and collision avoidance, the Leopoldina underlines that space sustainability must also encompass the atmosphere itself, i.e., the fate and effects of re-entering debris and its residues.
