Response to Review of poultry marketing standards

19 May 2023

Dutch Meat Importers Associations feedback Already in 2013 an EU study showed that the standards used measuring the water content of poultry meat were incorrect. The EU importers of poultry meat organized in the UECBV have mentioned this in a letter to the EU Commission. One might expect that once the EU legislation on marketing standards would be changed that this incorrectness would be immediately corrected. Legislation is putting boundaries between which people, companies etc have to move. If something is put incorrect on a label this can lead to actions against the people or companies. Already for years the EU Commission is pushing companies to put something on a label which is not only incorrect, it also does cost a lot of money, which would not have been the case if the right standards would be used. The EU Commission is now proposing to carry out test for the coming 5 years in order to get a grip on the standards. Strange enough these test are only carried out on EU products. Import products will not be part of this study. In the mean time the imported products still are foreseen to be controlled on basis of wrong standards which will be unacceptable. Furthermore it could well be that different genetic strains are used in the poultry meat production which picture would not be obtained. Different genetic strains would also need different standards. EU poultry meat for export which will not reach the EU consumer is put outside the obligation for control on the water content of poultry meat. Import poultry meat which will go for industrial processing, will also not reach the EU Consumer, only after industrial processing. This poultry meat should also stay outside the control on water content control. The DMIA fully underlines the UECBV s position also handed in for this public consultation.
