Response to CO2 emission class of heavy-duty vehicles with trailers

29 Jun 2023

Einride has extensive knowledge of the electrification of heavy transport and we already see that there is a great interest from the business community in taking a comprehensive approach to this issue. The demand is high and the pace of the rollout will be determined by how quickly society can support this transition. For several years now, Einride has operated a fleet of electric, heavy vehicles initially in Sweden but now also in several other markets in Europe and the USA. We see that it is possible to electrify large parts of heavy transport already today and that it can be made profitable in the fairly near future. PwC has shown in a global study that electric heavy trucks will be more profitable than diesel already in 2025 in most use cases and that the heavy electric trucks are already 26-34% cheaper in 2030. Today, energy efficient trailers are more expensive than their less efficient counterparts. Electric HDVs are expected to be profitable within the near future but until that time, bridging the gap through incentives, such as differentiated road charging, can speed up the green transition of the road freight sector. Therefore, Einride sees no reason to wait until 1 July 2030 for Member States to take into account the effect of trailers on the CO2 emissions of its combination with a motor vehicle. Instead, Einride urges the amended Directive to include that Member States shall take into account that effect no later than 2027.

Response to Approval of automated vehicles and of systems intended for such vehicles

5 May 2022

Einride welcomes the European Commission draft Implementing Regulation laying down rules for the application of Regulation (EU) 2019/2144 of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards uniform procedures and technical specifications for the type-approval of fully automated motor vehicles with regard to their automated driving system (ADS).This clearly shows the EU's support for the deployment of fully automated vehicles and a recognition of their benefits. Through this legislative framework the EU has an opportunity to shape the future of mobility by pioneering the regulation for fully automated vehicles. Given the far-reaching implications on the future of the industry in Europe, it is crucial that the EU gets it right. Einride respectfully submits its response to the public consultation thereon. This submission outlines specific areas where Einride considers the draft Regulation warrants further improvements and strengthening.
