Response to European Democracy Shield
26 May 2025
Comment on the European Democracy Shield As outlined in the call for evidence, the European Democracy Shield (EUDS) should address the most severe risks to democracy in the EU and build on the work already done under the European Democracy Action Plan and the Defence of Democracy Package. EURid (www.eurid.eu), the registry for the .eu top-level domain, is a member of the Internet technical community and operator of essential technical internet infrastructure. Above its primary role, it also actively contributes to education and disinformation prevention through various initiatives aimed at enhancing digital literacy and fostering critical thinking among Europeans. In line with the position of our membership organisation CENTR, we believe the EUDS must recognise the importance of and promote voluntary private-public partnerships in educational initiatives aimed at internet safety and increased digital literacy skills. We are listing examples of EURids recent initiatives in education and disinformation prevention. 1. .eu Academy In November 2023, EURid hosted the second edition of the .eu Academy Masterclasses in Brussels. These expert-led workshops focused on topics such as artificial intelligence, disinformation, and the defense of European values in challenging times. A notable session featured Sophie Timmermann, deputy head of the fact-checking team at CORRECTIV, who provided practical tools for identifying and combating disinformation, including techniques like reverse image searches and geolocation of images. Timbermann emphasized the importance of education in developing critical thinking skills to resist disinformation. The recordings of the master classes were made available to the public. The topic of disinformation prevention was further discussed in December 2024, when EURid hosted an event in the premises of the European parliament. In April 2025 EURid organised together with ICANN, CZ.NIC and CEVRO university an expert exchange The Prague Dialogue: Internet Governance & Disinformation Challenges. The recording will also be available for further educational activities. 2. SAFEonLINE Art Competition Since 2019, EURid has organized the SAFEonLINE Art Competition, inviting high school students to create visual representations of cybersecurity issues they encounter in daily life, such as cyberbullying, phishing, and online privacy. This initiative aims to raise awareness about online safety and promote responsible online behavior among young people. 3. Youth Committee Engagement EURid established its Youth Committee in 2020, comprising young representatives who advise on relevant projects and act as ambassadors for EURid. The committee plays a vital role in promoting internet governance discussions and ensuring that the perspectives of younger generations are considered in shaping digital policies. EURid's initiatives align with broader European efforts to combat disinformation through education and improve media literacy. EURid also joined the information campaign prior to the European elections highlighting websites with serious content.
