Eucobat welcomes the Commission’s initiative to adapt and modernise the legal framework for the entire life cycle of batteries, which are one of the key enablers for sustainable development and green mobility, clean energy and climate neutrality, contributing to the Green Deal objectives.
From this perspective, the recommendations of Eucobat pertaining to several aspects of the proposed Regulation are related to:
- Classification of batteries, which requires as much clarity as possible
- A collection target for waste portable batteries, that should take into account the waste batteries available for collection and not the batteries put on the market
- Financial guarantees for the future collection and recycling of waste batteries, with a longer and longer lifespan and a high collection and recycling cost
- Labelling of cells, modules and stocks, in order to allow a correct recycling
- A clear definition of "remanufacturing" and "repurposing", a clear distinction between both activities and a clear role description of all concerned actors
- A visible fee, ensuring the financing of the collection and recycling of all waste portable batteries.
