Response to Anti-racism Strategy

7 Jul 2025

We call for an anti-racist policy that tackles systemic and structural racism against all marginalized groups, including Jews, in a unified manner, and creates opportunities for marginalized groups to come together in struggle. This will allow the focus to stay on the institutions, policies and ideologies which reproduce racism and discrimination against racialized peoples, rather than dividing us from one another. Antisemitism is often labeled as a unique, exceptional phenomenon; however, this view can only be sustained by wilfully ignoring the devastating and enduring impact of racism against racialized peoples the world over, largely at the hands of European powers. Singling out antisemitism as a somehow unique phenomenon is simply historically inaccurate and isolates Jewish people from our natural allies - other racialized and marginalized groups who are fighting for the same vision of justice and equality. Rather than this isolating perspective on antisemitism, we contend that antisemitism is a form of racism like all others, and should be addressed within broader anti-racist policy efforts across Europe, not in isolation. We reject all narratives and policies that divide the struggle against antisemitism from the antiracist struggle. This includes any policy effort that conflates criticism of Israel and antisemitism, or the protection of Israeli interests with protection of Jewish people. An ever-growing segment of the Jewish population opposes the State of Israel and, even more importantly, opposing the State of Israel - or any other state or government - is a protected civil right. All people have a right to freedom of expression, including protest, regardless of their religion, race, gender, political view, or ethnicity. Policies that support the conflation of criticism of Israel with Jew-hatred are antisemitic in nature, in that they dehumanize and stereotype Jewish people, and further, they endanger Jews by making us the face of increasing state repression in the form of the crackdown on the pro-Palestine movement. The only way forward is a united struggle against all forms of racism.
