Response to European Affordable Housing Plan

4 Jun 2025

The housing crisis poses an existential threat to European endangered and minoritised languages in that people are being compelled to leave their communities because of lack of housing caused by too many vacation rentals and "second homes", this in turn reduces the housing that is available and pushes up the price making housing unaffordable. A major concern is that no matter how much is spent on language policy and planning, effective language recovery, and minoritised language-medium education, all of this is undermined if people, the speakers, cant live in their own communities. In Ireland, in Catalonia, in Iles Balears, for example, the situation is urgent and needs to be addressed by Governments and the EU immediately. It is vital that any new EU measures on housing includes the language dimension and looks at how the lack of housing impacts on endangered and minoritised European languages, part of our shared European cultural heritage, and proposes specific measures to deal with the problem. For our languages to thrive we need to see housing treated as a right, not a commodity. We need to ensure that housing is treated as a community need, like schools or hospitals, rather than a financial asset to make a profit on.
