Response to Protection of workers from risks related to exposure to asbestos at work

On behalf of the Danish Society of Occupational and Environmental Medicine for the EU-process on asbestos: Although a revised OEL is of importance mostly as a signal that asbestos is an important occupational problem, in our experience other tools are probably of greater importance. No matter the OEL, workers are only protected if the necessary measures of protection are taken during renovation and construction work. This is often not the case. Occupational exposure in the EU will only be lowered efficiently if 1.Contractors and employers are forced to evaluate the risk of incurring asbestos during renovation, to test for its presence, and to comply with rules for the protection of workers 2. Workers that perform asbestos removal and renovation in areas with materials containing asbestos have to go through a compulsory education and have a diploma for this type of work, possible subject to renewal at certain intervals 3. Inspection of work places is frequently performed by the local authorities
