Response to Roadmap towards Nature Credits

18 Sept 2025

The European Outdoor Conservation Association (EOCA) welcomes the opportunity to submit feedback on the "Roadmap towards Nature Credits" on behalf of it's membership. The full response is attached as a pdf but please see the summary below: In EOCAs view any proposed Nature Credit system must: - Be a mechanism for nature and investment Nature Credits should be the mechanism from which businesses can invest in nature to mitigate their risk and exposure to nature loss/ biodiversity collapse, and not be used primarily to offset the impacts of their own supply chain and production. - Have impact aligned with the latest science It is important a Nature Credit market be structured to support biodiversity in the most impactful way. It must contribute to broad ecosystem services and restoration of natural processes, whilst not being single habitat feature or species focussed. EOCAs recommendation is to follow the guidance from the 2024 IPBES Nexus Report. - Use a rights based system Nature Credit criteria, either in the broader principles, or individual project selection, must apply human rights principles to conservation and other measures. This includes recognizing the rights of Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and women. - Connect people to nature There has been quantified evidence of a growing disconnection of people from nature over the last 200 years creating locked-in risks to environmental stewardship. The Nature Credit market must play a role in reconnecting people with nature as part of its objectives, ensuring continued (and increased) access to nature for society. - Be non-aggregable Bio-diversity (unlike carbon) is location specific, species are dependent on specific landscape, soil and climatic zones. It is important that Nature Credits do not allow the aggregation of actions across multiple habitats. - Use credible and accepted metrics Metrics used should be well tested and already known or implemented by potential buyers and traders of any credits. EOCAs recommendation is the adoption of, or alignment with Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TFND). Please see attached pdf for full details.
