Response to Commission Regulation on microbiological criteria for foodstuffs

20 Jul 2018

On behalf of European producers of sprouts, the European Sprouted Seeds Association (ESSA) welcomes the revision of Regulation (EC) No 2073/2005 amending the food safety criterion for Listeria monocytogenes in sprouted seeds. ESSA endorses the amendment to Regulation (EC) No 2073/2005 in accordance with the EFSA opinion of 15 November 2011, whereby sprouted seeds support the growth of Listeria monocytogenes and should therefore be covered by the criterion for ready-to-eat foods able to support the growth of Listeria monocytogenes, other than those intended for infants and for special medical purposes. ESSA members are committed to producing sprouts fulfilling the European requirements that are perceived by the industry as the minimum requirements to ensure consumers’ protection against microbiological risks, and welcome this amendment that will provide European consumers with better protection against Listeria monocytogenes.
