Response to European Innovation Act

23 Sept 2025

The ESRF welcomes the European Innovation Act, highlighting the role of research infrastructures (RIs) in driving innovation through advanced X-ray capabilities, high-throughput analysis and industry collaboration. Despite strong demand, structural barriers hinder full industrial use: low awareness, misaligned academic models, slow access procedures, financial risks for SMEs and limited expertise. Pilot SME access schemes and cascade funding show the impact of tailored support. The Act is a chance to embed RIs in Europes innovation system, with dedicated long-term funding, rapid industry-aligned access and recognition of RIs as strategic assets for Europes technological sovereignty. The attached file details this feedback further.

Response to European strategy on research and technology infrastructures

20 May 2025

The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), an ESFRI Landmark and world-leading light source, welcomes the European Commissions initiative to develop a new Strategy on Research and Technology Infrastructures (RIs and TIs). In an era of rapid technological and geopolitical shifts, a coherent and integrated infrastructure strategy is essential to strengthen Europes scientific leadership and industrial competitiveness. The ESRF feedback (see attached PDF) highlights the need to bridge RIs and TIs more effectively, ensure long-term and coordinated investment, simplify access for SMEs, embed digital and AI-ready infrastructure, and support talent development across the ecosystem. The strategy should enable synergies between research and industry, foster publicprivate collaboration, and position infrastructures as engines of innovation and resilience for Europes future.
