Response to Trade measure addressing the negative trade-related effects of global excess capacity on the EU steel sector

8 Aug 2025

As the steel is a strategic item within the European Union, we must take care of the producers if we want to maintain our independence. Chinese are trying to close our factories to be the only ones, but we cannot permit that. This is regarding not only to steel even to steel products such as pipes & tubes, flanges and fittings, valves, and so on.. we need to maintain an industry here in Europe. The severe trade challenges faced by the industry continue worsening: global overcapacity is at record level and the adoption of trade measures worldwide is proliferating. This coincides with the EU industrys decarbonisation process which makes it quite difficult for our factories to be competitive. The playing rules are not the same for the European factories and for the chinese. While our companies have very strict environmental regulations, safety regulations, and worker welfare, the chinese mainly owned by the chinese government have overcapacity with lack of regulations. This makes the competition extremely unfair. It's about our future, it's about our independence. Now with all the tariffs around the world, the European market can be really affected if we do not take care of our customs
