Response to Environmental claims based on environmental footprint methods

In the field of plastic reduction and plastics sustainability, the Flustix initiative already provides, what the EU Inception Impact Assessment strives for. The Flustix initiative is dedicated to plastic reduction and the avoidance of plastic waste by recycling to support the responsible use of fossil fuels. The initiave wants to direct consumer demand for less plastic and let consumers be an active part in the plastic-loop.
Flustix as an organisation does not aim to demonise synthetics in general. Synthetic materials are indispensable in many branches, e.g. the medical, transport and security sectors, but it should be replaced, reduced or kept in loop wherever it makes sense.
So how can Flustix participate in the Inception Impact Assessment „Legislative proposal on substantiating green claims“?
The Circular Economy Action Plan by the EU Commission suggests to: „develop[…] for the first time rules on measuring recycled content in products“. These rules already do exist! Flustix provides them with the flustix RECYCLED trustmark. The RECYCLED mark certificates products, semi-finished products, components or raw materials which contain plastic recyclates, declaring the percentage (1-100 %) as well as the type of recyclates (PCR / PIR / MIX). The certification programme of Flustix RECYCLED is based on DIN EN ISO 14021 and DIN EN 15343, so it already provides member-state-widely, what the EU aims for in the CEAP.
Flustix defined these rules together with the well established, independent and renowned certification partner DIN CERTCO, who is responsible for auditing and certification.
Flustix RECYCLED is presented in a clear, specific, unambiguous and accurate manner to empower consumers for active participation in the green transition. Flustix guarantees the comparability of results and therefore prevents unfair competition on environmental performance and costs to companies. With the transparency of the Flustix RECYCLED trustmark, consumers and market actors do have access to simplified, immediate and trustworthy information on the environmental performance of products.
Such a „standard methodology“ as it is required in the Inception Impact Assessment paper also exists to certify plastic-free and microplastic-free goods. Flustix has set up the first legally binding certification sheme on it. By examining every product via laboratory test, Flustix guarantees, that a product labelled with the trustmark does not contain any plastic or bioplastic at all. At state oft the art, there is no other trustmark worldwide that can provide such a strict and safe, independent certification system, like the Flustix initiative does.
„Consumers and businesses need reliable, comparable and verifiable information to make sustainable decisions“ – Flustix offers this information, by informing clearly and transparent, B2B and B2C. Our certification shemes, testing processes and audit systems are clear and openly viewable, as well as the confirmation assessment system for certification and the licensing.
The globally accepted certification scheme can help the European Union to transform consumption patterns in a more sustainable direction. Supply chains are cross-border in nature. Both in the EU and internationally, it helps the EU to work on international standards to promote further harmonisation of eco-conscious methods, for goods which will be imported into the EU and EU-goods.
Therefore and to discuss how to proceed on fighting „green“ self-declarations, we would appreciate getting involved with the EU Commission and further experts.
Best regards, hope to hear from you soon,
The Flustix initiative, Berlin
