Response to Evaluation of the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive 91/271/EEC (UWWTD)

8 Nov 2017

BSAG works to restore the good ecological balance of the Baltic Sea. For several years we have brought together research findings to the use of decision makers and activated companies to find and implement solutions for sustainable recovery and reuse of nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen), as part of EU’s circular economy objectives. The most severe problems of the Baltic Sea are eutrophication and hazardous substances. Urban waste water does not only expose waterbodies to risks of eutrophication, caused by excessive nutrients, but also to increasing risk of hazardous substances. The urban waste water treatment directive (91/271/EC) is highly relevant for EU member states quality of waterbodies by reducing notably the amount of phosphorus and nitrogen from municipal waste water. It can also contribute significantly in minimizing the risks related to hazardous substances in urban waste water. Therefore evaluation of the directive need to take into account the organic contaminants and other hazadous substances in the urban waste water treatment in order to contribute to a safe and sustainable Circular Economy.
