Response to Digital Services Act: deepening the Internal Market and clarifying responsibilities for digital services

The G5 Santé members would like to remind the impact of illicit, substandard and falsified products have on patient safety and, overall, society. They seriously harm or kill patients, challenge healthcare systems and undermine people’s trust in quality medicines. In the context of a global pandemic and vaccination campaign, we believe that this point should be high on the EU legislator’s mind when drafting this regulation. We have learned, even more in the current period, that trust is the key of a successful health strategy. When a patient/consumer is looking for a potential online purchase of medicines, the first results on search engines pages display a large number of illicit online pharmacies. This lack of visibility of the legitimate offer generates both uncertainty and unsafety for patients and prevents the development of legitimate online business activities. With the G5 Santé’s contribution to the DSA, we call for a safer Internet for EU citizens and a fair environment for genuine business activities to progress.
