Response to Strategy for long-term EU greenhouse gas emissions reductions

10 Aug 2018

The Gas for Climate initiative is committed to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions in the EU energy system by 2050 and is convinced that renewable and low carbon gas will help to deliver this at lowest possible costs and maximum benefits for the European economy. Gas for Climate would like to present its study, published in February 2018 on www.gasforclimate2050.eu. The Gas for Climate study, led by Ecofys, assesses the role of renewable gas used in existing gas infrastructure in a fully decarbonized EU energy system by 2050. The study concludes that (1) renewable gas (biomethane, hydrogen) can be scaled up very significantly, to more than 120 billion cubic metres of natural gas equivalent, and (2)using this gas in a smart combination with increasing quantities of renewable electricity can save about €140 billion per year up to 2050.
