Response to Carbon capture utilisation and storage deployment

31 Aug 2023

GIDARA Energy is a company based in the Netherlands dedicated to gasification. Gasification converts traditionally non-recyclable waste into methanol, which is used as a fuel or to produce virgin-quality chemicals, plastics and others, substituting traditional oil-based petrochemical products for a wide range of daily-life products, such as plastics, textiles, adhesives, paints, toys. GIDARA Energy acknowledges the importance of carbon removals. This is a necessary step to include in climate policy. The proposal should not delay the replacing of primary fossil resources by circular and sustainable alternatives. The proposal should incentivize bringing less primary fossil carbon into the system. The aim should be to decrease the release of newly mined (primary fossil) carbons into the economy. Carbon release stemming from primary fossil resources should be penalized. The incentive to replace primary fossil resources should be larger than the incentive for CCS of fossil carbon. The Commission should consider introducing a hierarchy (in industrial processes, differing from carbon removals by farming). Since in a circular economy alternative carbon sources are needed, CCU should be incentivized.

Response to Ecodesign for Sustainable Products - Product priorities

11 May 2023

Gidara Energy welcomes the opportunity to share its recommendations on the new product priorities for Ecodesign for Sustainable Products as regard to chemicals and plastics (as intermediate products) and to paints, and toys (as end-use products). - Gidara is of the view that methanol should be added to the scope of chemical products in the new product priorities for Ecodesign for Sustainable Products as one of the primary chemicals constituting the bulk of chemical industry - Eco-design criteria are needed for petrochemicals and some of its main subsequent products; plastics and paints and toys, that are produced in- and imported to Europe. - Introducing circular content in chemicals and plastics (intermediate products) is recommended as is introducing circular content in their main subsequent end-products (paints and toys) to reduce the risk of carbon leakage and replacement of industry outside the EU. - High mandate (>50% in 2030) on circular content in primary chemicals such as methanol is critical to substitute oil. - To fully switch from primary fossil-based materials, requirements should go beyond recycled content to also include biogenic content and other waste streams - In terms of carbon footprint, distinction between emissions from fuel (scope 1 and 2) and carbon in the feedstock (scope 3) should be made. - The calculation of the carbon footprint should allow for using renewable electricity, including when such electricity is taken from the electricity grid - The energy efficiency criteria should focus on the replacement of fossil-based resources. - Gidara Energy strongly agrees upon the high priority ranking of chemicals for the EU strategic autonomy - in line with the ESPR preliminary study on new product priorities. This is particularly true for primary chemicals that are (currently) heavily dependent on natural gas import, such as methanol
