Response to Energy labelling requirements for local space heaters (review)

Glen Dimplex would like to thank the European Commission for the opportunity to provide feedback on the review of energy labelling requirements for local space heaters including the proposed merging of the energy labels for Lot 10 and Lot 20. Glen Dimplex believes that Lot 10 and Lot 20 products should have their own specific energy labelling schemes for the following reasons: - Local space heaters and room air conditioners have distinct functionalities and applications with their own performance criteria. - Merging the labels would make it difficult for consumers to make informed and appropriate purchase decisions. - Local space heaters have the capability to provide energy storage and grid flexibility services, aiding the deployment and penetration of greater levels of variable renewable energy on the grid. - Merging the labels would remove differentiation between best and worst in class and would discourage investment in energy efficiency innovation. - The proposal is based on the current PEF which is due to be updated in 2022; it therefore distorts the true performance of and devalues electric heating as a future technology. Glen Dimplex encourages the European Commission to reconsider the merging of Lot 10 and 20, in favour of separate labels. Additionally, we call for the new regulation to reflect the updated PEF (at the end of 2022). The Energy Labelling Regulation should also be aligned with the Ecodesign Regulation and new Sustainable Products Regulation, and reflect the role of local space heaters appropriately.
