Response to European Water Resilience Strategy

4 Mar 2025

Grundfos welcomes the European Commissions initiative to develop a renewed vision for water resilience in Europe. Water stress knows no borders, and with approximately 20% of the EUs territory and 30% of its population affected by water scarcity each year, urgent action is required. Beyond water stress, Europe also faces increased flooding and more frequent extreme events. For coastal areas, these changes are compounded by the impacts of rising sea-levels. These changes to Europes climate amplify the impacts of: Ageing water infrastructure Rising water demand from new industries The strategy for water resilience in Europe will require commensurate investment in adaptation and integration of approaches to water resilience that allow society to thrive under conditions of increasing uncertainty and to ensure business continuity for competitive industries. In addition to environmental concerns, Europe also faces significant industrial challenges that will be further exacerbated if sustainable water management is not prioritized alongside energy costs in the Commissions policy response. To this end, additional measures are needed, including: Incentivizing decentralized water management in industry (e.g., optimizing water demand, treating and reusing water onsite, and recovering resources from wastewater without impacting output performance). Reducing network leakages by leveraging digital solutions and deploying water-efficient devices and processes. Ensuring adequate financing models are in place to support sustainable water management and climate change adaptation. Promoting smart water use through rainwater and greywater harvesting. Enhancing data collection and monitoring to ensure up-to-date and timely information on water quantity and quality.
