ROADMAP feedback for Evaluation of the URBAN WASTE WATER TREATMENT DIRECTIVE 91/271/EC (UWWTD)
Hach welcomes the publication of the Evaluation Roadmap of the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive.
Hach is the European Union’s leading company in lab and on-line water analysis. The company’s product and service portfolio spans all areas of waste water quality testing. Analytical tests and analyzers fulfil requirements of current UWWTD for COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand), total suspended solids (TSS), total phosphorus (TP) and total Nitrogen (TN). The chemical tests are embedded in a voluntary free of change Take-Back System.
The used chemical tests for water quality testing contain pre-dosed reagents in small glass tubes (cuvettes). The glass tubes are opened only for dosing water sample into cuvettes. After evaluation the used cuvettes are send back for recycling or disposal purposes to Hach’s official environmental centre in Düsseldorf Germany.
Based on that “closed loop system” a contamination of test users and in general the environment with reagents is not possible.
Therefore, Hach does not suggest to change monitoring parameters in table 1 of annex 1 during revision process of UWWTD especially to replace COD by an alternative to protect human health and the environment against hazardous reagents.
COD is highly used in all European waste water legislations as monitoring parameter and highly used as design parameter for waste water treatment plants (WWTP) and taxation.
From Hach’s point of view a replacement of COD would initiate a huge change of design and monitoring and legislation purposes European wide. We believe that this is not necessary.
