Response to A comprehensive approach to mental health

24 Jan 2023

During Covid-19 crisis, social distancing, self-isolation/quarantine and national lockdowns became the cores to control the pandemic. However, these measures also led to increases in social isolation, loneliness and stress together with an unprecedented increase of online pornography consumption. This learning about porns effects on the brain was the most important factor helping people overcome the wide range of negative mental and physical effects from overuse of porn. Recent research studies link poor mental and emotional health to porn use. These effects range from brain fog and social anxiety through to depression, negative body image and flashbacks. Eating disorders, on the rise in young people, cause more deaths than any other mental illness. Porn has a big impact on idealised notions of body image. Even three hours of porn use a week can cause a noticeable reduction in grey matter in key areas of the brain. When brain connections are involved, it means they impact behaviour and mood. Regular bingeing on hardcore internet porn can cause some users to develop mental health problems, compulsive use, even addiction. These interfere significantly with everyday life and life goals. Users often talk about feeling numb towards everyday pleasures. The EC Communication on a comprehensive approach to mental health should recognise at the European and national level online pornography as a public health issue in its addiction risks and impacts on the perception of sexuality, as well as support EU and national actions for the implementation of efficient prevention policies, addiction treatments and knowledge-sharing on the harms of online pornography.
