Response to A comprehensive approach to mental health

14 Feb 2023

Dermatological diseases, in particular, chronic skin conditions, can have significant effects on patients. This includes psychological, social and financial consequences of the skin disease on the patients, their families and on society. Studies have shown that patients with dermatology disease have an increased risk of depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts (Dalgard et al. 2015, The psychological burden of skin diseases). Dermatology diseases not only impact patients but their families as well. The Global Research on the Impact of Dermatological Diseases (GRIDD) study aims to collect global data on the impact of dermatological conditions on patients lives. The data collected will highlight the social and psychological challenges that the patient faces in addition to the physical symptoms of their disease. More about this research project can be found at https://globalskin.org/reserach The public policies at the EU and at the Member States level need to prioritise research and care on the dermatological diseases. A holistic approach to dermatology diseases and relevant training of the health professionals is needed to alleviate psychological burden of patients and their families.
