Response to Action plan for the development of EU organic production

7 Sept 2020

It is important to realise that sustainable farming is more than just going organic by removing/reducing chemicals from farms. In real sustainable farming animals and a wide variety of cultures interact to support each other. In a local example a biodynamic farmer has 130 cows producing beef offspring and puts 5 times more co2 in the ground than he produces. He is economically successful and uses no chemicals whatsoever. The quality of the products such farms produce will be more nourishing = reduced food consumption... Healthy farm =healthy food = health for people. The definition of a healthy farm should be copied on the definition of health by the WHO. One of the big issues in farming is that many farms have lost their sense and have become just businesses of harvesting as much as possible as quickly as possible, tangled up in financial ties by the banks and other interested parties. To get out of this cycle the first question to ask is: who is financing research in farming? Then research should get interested in the unusual, not research more of the same that has been researched for years now. There is a crisis looming: in 30 years a lot of the land for farming will be washed away by the rain into the rivers because of over-intensification. Research into more holistic farming will not be as technically savvy and spectacular as inventing the next tomato that will grow with very little need for water, or greenhouses built on top of skyscrapers but is more likely to produce a real sustainable type of farming. The farm becoming a healthy interaction between earth, climate, farmer and produce..... it sounds romantic but is actually acutely necessary. The EU has the capacity to do this research if it can hold back a very powerful lobby that has lots to loose from such changes. Besides of investigating how farming can regain a sense healthy natural complexity to benefit the quality (not just quantity) of its produce, research should be put in sectors such as agrohomeopathy (of which a huge body of research already exists), homeopathy for farm animals, biodynamic farming and use or herbals in farming. Such research is actually a requirement according to EU law. These way of managing illnesses will also contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gasses and pollution. Let's not panic by listening to those who promote more intensive farming to feed the earth's population. Investigate where these calls come from first.
