Response to Measures to reduce microplastic pollution

28 Dec 2021

Microplastic pollution is an emerging concern of the day with increased use of synthetic textiles. Synthetic textiles contribute to around 35% of the global microplastic pollution. These are the plastic micro fibres released during washing of synthetic textiles polluting the freshwater and marine water. It also impacts on human health mainly the neurotoxicity, skin diseases, etc. More than 60% of the textile products are from synthetic and is in an increasing trend, which may lead to major concern in future. More number of washing within the life cycle of the textile product increases the release of microplastics. To reduce micro plastic pollution, EU may refer to the following suggestions for consideration for EU product Environment Footprint (PEF) methodology: 1) Limit production and consumption of synthetic textiles 2) Promoting more natural fibres; cotton, wool, silk, etc 3) Every synthetic textile product shall have the microplastic pollution characteristic tag 4) Producers of synthetic textiles should mention about their PEF credentials including microplastic emission 5) Proper use, washing and disposal or recycle of synthetic textiles.
